Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital, recently encouraged people to reject negative emotions in the face of setbacks and instead embrace “pronoia.”
The Zuckerberg Envy
In an Aug. 14 interview with journalist Katty Kay, Scaramucci described an incident at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was also present.
“I was 43 at the time. I think Mark Zuckerberg was 23. So we were separated by 20 years and $20 billion,” said the former Goldman Sachs investment banker. “I felt this small standing next to him.”
Pronoia Instead of Paranoia
Scaramucci described the feeling as “Davos envy.” He remembered heading back to his hotel, taking out a piece of paper, and jotting down all the problems plaguing his business.
“And then I said, ‘Okay, let me flip the page and let me write down what could go right in the business,'” he said.
Scaramucci brought up pronoia, the exact opposite of paranoia, meaning that the “universe is bending toward you and that the people around you are helping you to succeed.”
“So, I tell my kids, and I’m going to tell your viewers and listeners: you want to be a pronoik. You don’t want to be a paranoik. That’s a waste of time,” the former White House Communications Director stated.
