Bitcoin Price Holds Above $78.5K as August Gains Near 25%

Strong August Performance

Bitcoin’s price appeared to consolidate around $78,000 on the last day of August after the latest direct military exchanges between the U.S. military and Iranian forces sent it tumbling. Market data showed the cryptocurrency appeared to be on course to test the $80,000 resistance again after easily reclaiming $79,000 Sunday afternoon.

However, soon after nearly tapping $79,400, the price spiraled downward, reaching an intraday low of $77,024 just before 8 p.m. EST. Afterward, the cryptocurrency began a slow climb toward $78,000, a mark it reclaimed at 1:25 a.m. EST Monday. The recovery continued until the price reached $78,750, at which point momentum was lost again as it dropped back below $78,000.

Nevertheless, the recovery was swift this time, taking just over 30 minutes to reclaim $78,500. As of 12 p.m., the price hovered just below $78,600, reflecting a 0.6% decline.

While the marginal loss helped drag bitcoin’s market capitalization to $1.57 trillion, it did little to alter the cryptocurrency’s overall performance in August. With just a few hours left in the month, bitcoin’s near-flat price action Monday meant it remained on course to end August with 30-day gains of just under 25%—one of its best performances in 2026 so far. Furthermore, August gains have significantly helped trim overall 2026 losses from near 30% at the end of July to just over 10%.
