Block Integrates Bitcoin Lightning into AI Payment Standard x402

Block, the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, is integrating the Bitcoin Lightning Network into x402, a payment protocol designed for AI agents. The strategy aims to expand Bitcoin's real-world utility in an environment where AI agents transact small amounts at high volume without human intervention.

Block announced on the 25th (local time) that it is joining the x402 Foundation and adding Lightning Network support to the x402 protocol. Lightning is a layer-2 technology that processes transactions off the Bitcoin main chain, offering low fees and fast processing speeds. Block determined that these characteristics are well-suited for the small-value, high-frequency payments required in AI agent-to-agent commerce.

Steve Lee, head of Spiral, Block's Bitcoin development initiative, said: "Bringing Lightning to x402 is a concrete step toward making Bitcoin everyday money for both people and the agents acting on their behalf. We'll help the industry build more services on top of this."

x402 is an open payment standard designed to allow AI agents and web services to autonomously pay for API access, data, and digital service fees without a separate manual payment process. Instead of a human entering card information each time an AI agent retrieves information or calls another service, the protocol itself settles costs.
