Crypto companies posted more jobs in September than in any month this year, yet fewer people applied for them. Postings on one of the industry’s biggest job boards tripled from July to 1,241, as bitcoin rebounded more than 40% from its summer lows and investor money returned. Here’s why the numbers look so strange, who these jobs are actually for, and what it means if you’ve ever wondered about working in crypto.

The Numbers Behind the Hiring Surge

The headline data comes from a Q3 2026 hiring report by one of crypto’s largest job boards, which tracks listings and applications on its platform.

MonthCompanies hiringJob postingsApplicationsApplications per job
July10738226,728~70
August7388624,641~28
September1251,24119,605~16

Postings rose about 225% in two months, beating January’s previous 2026 high of 573. Meanwhile, applications fell about 27%. In July, each job drew around 70 applications. By September, it was closer to 16.

The most in-demand areas were finance, engineering and trading, with protocol developers, compliance leads and quant traders singled out as especially hard to hire. A protocol developer builds the core code of a blockchain itself, while a quant trader uses math and computer models to make trading decisions. Employers also asked for experience with Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, plus stablecoins, AI and security.
