Crypto markets staged their strongest rally in months on Wednesday, August 19, with virtually no major asset left behind. Total crypto market capitalization jumped roughly $113 billion, or about 6%, in a single day, and altcoins collectively reclaimed the $1 trillion mark. Bitcoin surged from around $64,000 to an intraday high of $69,749—its first time above $69,000 since June and, by Bloomberg's count, its largest one-day gain since March. Ether was the standout, breaking out of its August trading range above $2,000 and accelerating to roughly $2,290, a nearly 20% single-day move and the biggest of the summer. Solana, XRP, BNB, and Hyperliquid all posted double-digit gains, while crypto-linked equities rallied in tandem: Strategy rose 13%, Coinbase 11%, Bullish nearly 13%.
The Trigger: Treasury's "QE Lite"
The spark came from Washington. The U.S. Treasury announced it would at least double the size of its long-end liquidity buyback operations, raising the minimum to $4 billion per operation—a move markets have dubbed "QE Lite." The context matters: 30-year yields had spiked to 5.337% the prior week, a level not seen since 2007, amid an unresolved Fed policy path following a three-dissent hawkish vote in July. The Treasury's announcement effectively installed an official buyer at the long end, and yields fell sharply on the news while the dollar weakened and gold hit multi-month highs. Crucially, this isn't classical QE—the buybacks are funded by short-term bill issuance rather than balance-sheet expansion—but the marginal relief to discount rates on duration-sensitive assets was real, which is why rate-sensitive names like Ether and Solana outran Bitcoin.
