On the last Monday of August, a financial expert hired by British media personality Katie Price opened a cryptocurrency wallet using a recovery phrase her husband Lee Andrews had given her as apparent proof of his wealth. The wallet contained $3 — approximately £2.22. Andrews had told Price he held $50 million in that wallet. By Tuesday, Price had consulted a London divorce lawyer. By Wednesday, the story was everywhere.

The tabloid coverage of this development has largely presented it as a tale of romantic betrayal: a self-proclaimed Dubai multi-millionaire exposed as a fantasist by the woman he married. The more useful frame for anyone who uses or is offered cryptocurrency as a marker of wealth is the technical one. A cryptocurrency recovery phrase proves that a person can access a wallet. It does not prove — and cannot prove — what that wallet contains, or what it will contain ten minutes after you look.

That structural gap — the inherent design of the BIP39 seed phrase standard — is what appears to have made the alleged deception possible in the first place.

How Crypto Recovery Phrases Actually Work — and What They Cannot Prove

When someone creates a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet, their device generates a recovery phrase: a sequence of 12 to 24 ordinary words drawn from a standardized list defined by a technical protocol called BIP39 (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39), established in 2013. Anyone who holds those words holds the master key to every account in that wallet, on every supported blockchain — Bitcoin, Ethereum, and most others. That is why every security guide in existence tells users never to share their phrase with anyone, under any circumstances.
