According to Sun, unlike the rapid, culminating rallies in the Bitcoin market in 2013 and 2017, the current cycle may be more gradual. The analyst believes that multiple local peak signals may be seen in the market before reaching the final cycle peak.
Sun stated that one of the key reasons behind this change is the transformation in the Bitcoin investor profile, noting that since 2021, the main buyers of $BTC have shifted from individual investors to larger players such as publicly traded companies, spot Bitcoin ETFs, and institutional treasuries.
It was noted that traditional indicators such as funding rates and MVRV Z-Score may not reach the extreme levels seen in previous cycles, due to institutional investors predominantly buying from the spot market and some funds using delta-neutral strategies for arbitrage purposes. According to Sun, the key factor determining the peak of the new cycle may be institutional capital’s difficulty in following the rise in Bitcoin, rather than widespread over-optimism among individual investors.
