Trapped-ion quantum computing and networking developer IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has deployed an operational, hybrid quantum-safe security network connecting its global facilities across Geneva, Switzerland, and Seoul, South Korea. Announced in an enterprise security technical briefing, the deployment integrates physical Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) with algorithmic Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) to protect mission-critical operational data, customer IP, and communications infrastructure against “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” (HNDL) threats.

The intercontinental data pathway represents an internal commercial operationalization of IonQ’s security portfolio. Rather than staging an isolated testbed, IonQ is using the hybrid deployment to validate a repeatable defense-in-depth blueprint for multinational enterprises and sovereign institutions facing accelerated post-quantum migration deadlines.

[ IonQ Intercontinental Quantum-Safe Architecture Profile ]
Network LayerSecurity MechanismDeployment Scope & Functionality
• Metropolitan Local Loop• Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)
• Clavis XG QKD Series
• Delivers information-theoretic key exchange over dark and multiplexed fiber across four IonQ operational sites in Geneva, Switzerland.
• Intercontinental WAN• Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC)
• NIST-Standardized Algorithms
• Secures software-defined VPN endpoints and encrypted transit tunnels routing data across public backbones between Geneva and Seoul.
• Cryptographic Agility• Hybrid Key Encapsulation (KEM)• Combines physical quantum keys with lattice-based mathematical encapsulation, maintaining encryption integrity even if an intermediate relay is compromised.
• Target Assets Protected• Enterprise Mission-Critical Traffic• Safeguards proprietary QPU telemetry, algorithmic compiler IP, internal communications, and cloud execution logs.

Bridging Physical QKD with Algorithmic PQC

The Geneva-to-Seoul pathway addresses a central topological challenge in quantum communications: the transmission limits of single photons over long distances. While terrestrial QKD provides provable, information-theoretic security against eavesdropping, attenuation in standard silica fiber limits unrepeated physical transmission to a few hundred kilometers.
