The expansion of ISO 20022 across global payment networks is drawing fresh scrutiny from digital asset analysts, with one researcher arguing the messaging standard could reshape how major cryptocurrencies compete for relevance in institutional finance. At the center of the debate is whether XRP stands to gain ground while Bitcoin loses one of its most frequently cited use cases.

Crypto researcher SMQKE outlined the argument in a recent post on X, pointing to a document that describes how ISO 20022 establishes a unified framework for payment messaging. The standard, already adopted by major financial institutions and payment networks worldwide, creates a common language for payment requests and orders that allows different digital currencies to interact more efficiently within existing infrastructure.

The core claim is straightforward: by removing technical barriers between payment networks, ISO 20022 could let companies and individuals transact in whichever digital currency best suits their needs. In that environment, cryptocurrencies engineered for institutional compatibility would have a natural advantage.

SMQKE identified XRP as a prime beneficiary. The digital asset operates on the blockchain-based payment system developed by Ripple, and the researcher noted that XRP is positioned to comply with the ISO 20022 standard. That compliance, the analysis suggests, would allow XRP to function smoothly alongside central bank digital currencies within centralized payment environments.
