Dean W. Ball, an OpenAI executive, urged attendees at a Thursday lecture to reject what he called a “silent consensus” in the artificial intelligence industry that machines will inevitably replace humans as the driving force behind society.

Ball said the industry has largely accepted a future in which AI surpasses human intelligence and takes increasing control of governing bodies and companies.

“The silent consensus is not consensus because people agree it is good,” Ball said. “It is consensus because people share the intuition that it is inevitable.”

Ball, the head of strategic futures at OpenAI and a former senior AI policy advisor in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, spoke as part of the Government department’s Vik-Bailey Lecture Series.

The lecture came amid a series of recent cyberattacks involving AI agents. Earlier this month, a hacker used AI agents to breach more than one hundred company websites, including SharkNinja. And in July, hundreds of rogue OpenAI test agents hacked parts of HuggingFace, a collaborative AI development platform, exposing its internal infrastructure.

Ball opened the talk by warning the audience that “one of the most significant sets of cybersecurity events in history is unfolding, with critical vulnerabilities being discovered seemingly every hour.”
