A seed phrase is a human-readable backup of recovery words that many self-custody crypto wallets generate to help you restore access if a device fails or goes missing. With those words and any required passphrase, a compatible wallet can recreate the keys that control your assets, so anyone who obtains the same recovery material may gain that access too. Record the words exactly, keep them private, and choose storage that protects your backup from theft and physical damage while keeping it available when you need it.
Seed Phrase Meaning and Terminology
A wallet seed phrase backs up the information from which the wallet creates its keys. You usually receive it during setup and record it for future recovery. The backup can remain useful even after the original phone, computer, or hardware device stops working.
People often use recovery phrase, secret recovery phrase, and mnemonic phrase to describe the same ordered set of seed words. There is a technical distinction: in BIP-39 wallets, the mnemonic is the readable word list, while the seed is a binary value derived from it. Calling the list a seed phrase is common shorthand.
