Points Clés

  • The story concerns Abdulrahman Alfozan, identified as an OpenAI engineer.
  • He is accused over an alleged secret recording.
  • The available excerpt does not establish the circumstances, evidence, or outcome of the allegation.

An OpenAI engineer could face up to five years in federal prison after prosecutors alleged he concealed an audio recording device in an executive conference room used for confidential discussions at the company's San Francisco headquarters.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national, was arrested on October 9 and remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for October 19, according to the Department of Justice.

The case involving one of the world's leading artificial intelligence companies is being framed by U.S. authorities as a national security issue, even as the Department of Justice has not disclosed a foreign government, competitor, or other recipient of any recordings. They also have not alleged who may have benefited from the information allegedly targeted.

"This alleged attempt by a Saudi national to steal sensitive communications from OpenAI was taken extremely seriously. Theft of intellectual property involving cutting-edge super intelligence technology poses a serious threat to our national security," Attorney General Todd Blanche posted on X Tuesday night.

Newsweek has reached out to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California and the Saudi Embassy in Washington, D.C., for comment.
