AI or Chatbots Face Criminal Charges in 2026? Crypto Bettors Weigh the Odds

Cryptocurrency punters doubt artificial intelligence will be charged with a crime in the U.S. in 2026, even as AI safety concerns take center stage.

Can AI be held Responsible?

Polygon (CRYPTO: POL)-based Polymarket currently assigns only a 5% chance that any Federal or state administration initiates a criminal indictment against AI or any large-language model by Dec. 31. Notably, odds in 2026 haven’t exceeded 11.5%.

Charges must be directed at the AI or the LLM. Charges brought only against the company that created or runs the AI do not count toward resolution.

Meanwhile, the odds that the U.S. will pass an AI Safety Bill this year have plunged from 44% earlier in the month to 11% as of this writing.

Effort to Combat Rogue AI

AI safety issues are receiving heightened attention from researchers and industry leaders. Anthropic’s latest IPO prospectus reportedly warned that advanced AI could create risks ranging from unexpected model behavior to potentially “catastrophic or existential” consequences for humanity.

OpenAI said the company wants to collaborate with Congress on "mandatory, capability-based national AI safety rules."

The company reportedly canceled the release of its advanced GPT-6.1 Astra model after it failed to meet internal safety standards during testing.
