Bitcoin dips after hotter-than-expected inflation stokes Fed-hike fears

Bitcoin slipped about 1.5% Wednesday to roughly $82,142 as a hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation print rippled across markets and dragged most crypto assets lower. Ethereum fell 2.8% to $2,440, Solana lost 1.9%, XRP slid 1.3%, and the total crypto market cap eased 0.7% to about $2.8 trillion.

What moved the market
- The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% year-over-year, up from 3.4% in August; economists had been looking for 3.6%.
- Gasoline surged 9.1% in one month and was responsible for more than half of September’s CPI gain.
- Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 2.6% year-over-year versus a 2.5% forecast — the Fed’s preferred gauge for persistent price pressures.

Why this matters for crypto
A hotter inflation reading increases the odds the Federal Reserve will raise rates again to cool demand. Traders now put roughly a 44–49% probability on another rate hike at the Oct. 27–28 meeting, up from about 22% before the report (CME FedWatch). That shift pushed short-term Treasury yields higher: the 2‑year jumped about 10 basis points to ~4.9%, and the 10‑year climbed toward ~5.3% — levels not seen in roughly 24 years.

Higher yields and the prospect of tighter monetary policy hit risk assets. A near‑risk‑free government bond yielding 5.3% becomes a more attractive alternative to Bitcoin, which generates no yield, while rising rates also lift the dollar and make borrowing — often used to lever crypto bets — more expensive. Equities fell as well: the S&P 500 dropped 0.6% and the Nasdaq 0.8% on the news.

Liquidations and ripple effects
Volatility and forced selling accelerated the downturn in crypto derivatives: more than $281 million in positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours, with most of the activity concentrated in the last four hours and the majority coming from Bitcoin long positions. Liquidations can compound moves as exchanges automatically close leveraged positions, creating cascades of selling.

Technical snapshot — Bitcoin
- Price action: Bitcoin opened the day around $83,066 and traded near $82,211 on the daily chart after reclaiming the Fibonacci “golden zone” earlier this week — an area where pullbacks in an uptrend often attract buyers.
- Trend signals: The 50‑day moving average remains above the 200‑day, indicating a still-intact long-term uptrend. The Average Directional Index (ADX) is 27.7 (down from 29.9), suggesting the trend is present but cooling. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at 48.7, just below the neutral 50 line.
- Volatility: The Squeeze Momentum Indicator has signaled compressed volatility for eight sessions, implying a larger move could be building; its current -0.76 reading leans slightly bearish.
- Key levels to watch: A daily close below $81,603 would break the golden zone and bring $80,365 (and the nearby trend band at $80,284) into focus, with $78,003 a deeper downside target. On the upside, bulls need to reclaim $84,245 to open the path toward $85,301, $86,644 and the October high near $87,422.

Looking ahead
Traders get another macro test Thursday with the Producer Price Index (PPI), and the Fed’s rate decision on Oct. 28 will be a major market mover. For crypto, the interplay between monetary policy, real yields and leveraged positioning will likely keep volatility elevated.
