Bitcoin dropped under $84,000 on Wednesday amid a surge of forced selling across crypto markets, with approximately $555.6 million in leveraged positions closed out over the preceding 24 hours, according to The Block $SQ.
Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market value, was down 1.7% at $84,071 and dipped as low as roughly $83,800, while Ether shed 3.3% to trade at $2,612. XRP and Solana also moved lower.
Long positions — bets that prices would rise — accounted for the majority of the forced closures, with $487.2 million in bullish wagers wiped out, according to The Block. A liquidation happens when an exchange automatically closes out a trader's position after losses erode their collateral below the level needed to keep the trade open.
"Bitcoin's pullback appears primarily driven by profit-taking and forced long liquidations, following a build-up in open interest and funding rates that left the market vulnerable to deleveraging," said Dominick John, analyst at Zeus Research, according to The Block.
Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, characterized the selling as a mechanical flush rather than a directional shift. "The dip in crypto prices serves as a leverage flush instead of a downward trend, stemming from crowded bets on higher prices being forced out, with most of the liquidations coming from long positions," Khus said, according to Bloomberg.
