Smart money is viewing the current price as an entry point, continuously accumulating at the bottom.

Author: Bitcoin Strategy

Compiled by: TechFlow

TechFlow Editor's Note: In Q2, Bitcoin fell 14%, but institutional 13F holdings increased by 7.5%, with smart money continuing to accumulate at the bottom. Wells Fargo and JPMorgan added over 10,000 BTC each in a single quarter, and the Abu Dhabi Sovereign Fund is also following suit. This indicates that institutions view current prices as entry points, which holds significant reference value for judging market bottoms.

Dear Bitcoin Holders,

In this week's Roxom "Bitcoin Market Condition" program, I discussed price trends. I classify this cycle as an institutional adoption and maturity cycle, with the main catalyst being ETF approval.

We have discussed repeatedly that the main entry points for institutional adoption are ETFs and vault companies.

For this reason, Bitcoin Strategy releases an institutional adoption report every quarter based on the latest institutional ETF holdings. The data comes from SEC 13F filings, which require institutions managing over $100 million in assets to report, also known as smart money.

Yesterday was the deadline, and the latest data on institutional ETF holdings for Q2 2026 has been released.

In today's briefing, we will discuss the latest insights from these filings, which are proxy indicators for institutional Bitcoin adoption. Let's dive straight in!

Institutional Adoption Report: Q2 2026

👉 Key Insight: In Q2, Bitcoin price fell 14.2%, while institutional holdings increased 7.5%. This bullish divergence indicates that institutions continued to accumulate during the formation of Bitcoin's bottom.

Institutional Share of ETF Holdings

Total ETF holdings decreased from 1,297,010 BTC to 1,211,322 BTC, a drop of 6.6%; while institutional holdings increased from 498,389 BTC to 535,723 BTC, a growth of 7.5%.

👉 Key Insight: Despite the decline in total ETF holdings, institutions increased their positions, with the institutional share rising from 38.4% to 44.2%, reaching a historic high!

Top 25 ETF Holders

Below are the top 25 institutional Bitcoin ETF holders.

👇 Key Insights:

17 of them increased their positions this quarter.

Wells Fargo and JPMorgan both added over 10,000 BTC.

The Abu Dhabi Sovereign Wealth Fund increased its position.

New Entering Institutions

Below is the list of new entering institutions allocating over 100 BTC for the first time.

The most notable is Ameriprise, a mainstream US wealth management and financial services company with over 10,000 financial advisors and approximately $1.7 trillion in assets under management.

This once again confirms that Bitcoin has become a mature institutional-grade asset and is gradually being incorporated into traditional wealth management through financial advisors. This is a very positive development.

Other new entrants are mainly hedge funds and investment management companies, among which Context Capital Management and Compass Rose Asset Management had the largest new allocations, at $191 million and $122 million respectively. Although the names may not be as notable, these are still large new positions and positive signals of continued growth in institutional adoption.

Number of Institutions

The number of institutions reporting Bitcoin holdings via 13F filings decreased from about 2000 in Q1 to nearly 1900 in Q2, a drop of 6.8%.

This indicates that the bear market is still quite brutal. Despite the overall increase in institutional holdings, some institutions were still forced or afraid to exit.

Conclusion

This institutional data really exceeded my expectations. Considering the bear market phase and price trends, I didn't expect to see such significant growth. Total institutional holdings almost surpassed the numbers we saw at the cycle peak.

This confirms that institutions view current prices as attractive entry points. Coupled with the recovery following recent digital credit stress tests, the possibility of recovery has increased.

Hope you understand this bullish divergence! As always, I try my best to provide you with the best data and insights. I'd love to see your comments and thoughts. 👊 🧡

See you next week, 🫡
