Bitcoin's two-week consolidation above $83,000 broke down on Wednesday, with the cryptocurrency sliding roughly 4% as the institutional demand that powered September's rally showed no sign of returning. The drop pushed prices below the floor of a trading range that had held since late September, raising questions about whether the stair-step advance since July has run out of momentum.

The reversal came as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5.3% and the dollar strengthened ahead of Federal Reserve minutes, creating renewed headwinds for risk assets. Leveraged crypto positions bore the brunt of the move, with about $550 million in liquidations hitting traders, most of them positioned for further upside.

ETF Flows: From Surge to Trickle

The catalyst for September's breakout — aggressive inflows into U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds — has evaporated. Those products attracted roughly $2.6 billion in September, with a single week ended Sept. 25 accounting for $2.39 billion of that total. The busiest day, Sept. 21, saw nearly $999 million in net inflows.

Since then, demand has cooled dramatically. Last week's net inflows totaled just $241 million. This week has been even weaker: the funds recorded $119 million in net inflows on Tuesday after losing $90 million on Monday, leaving the weekly total below $30 million, according to SoSoValue data.
