Macro Shock And Large Liquidations
Over the past day, the dominant driver across crypto has been macro data, not TAO itself.
A hotter than expected US CPI print for September showed headline inflation at 3.7% year over year, above both the prior 3.4% and economist expectations, with core CPI also beating forecasts. Multiple outlets note that this reignited expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening and higher for longer rates, which typically hurts risk assets including crypto.
In response, global risk markets sold off. Asian equity indices like Korea’s KOSPI and Japan’s Nikkei dropped roughly 5 to 8% in the same session, while US equity futures and major tech names weakened. Several reports tie the crypto move directly to this cross market risk off reaction.
Derivatives positioning magnified the move. Across crypto, around 900 million to 1 billion dollars of leveraged positions were liquidated over 24 hours, with roughly 85 to 90% of that being long liquidations according to Coinglass figures summarized in sources like crypto liquidations near $1 billion and Bitcoin drops as Asian equities tumble. That forced selling added mechanical downside pressure to many coins at once.
