cbBTC Bridge Could Bring $5B in Bitcoin Liquidity to Monad

That constraint has historically limited on-chain income options for Bitcoin holders, but a range of new financial structures are expanding those possibilities.

Chainlink has enabled cross-chain transfers of Coinbase's wrapped Bitcoin token, cbBTC, from the Base network to the Monad blockchain using its cross-chain interoperability protocol, known as CCIP. The integration could bring more than $5 billion worth of cbBTC into the Monad ecosystem, where

applications are already moving to adopt it.

According to an announcement from Monad, DeFi applications on the network, including Curvance and Neverland, are building cbBTC markets following the integration. The move introduces Bitcoin-backed liquidity to lending, borrowing, and other financial use cases on Monad, an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain built for high-throughput trading and financial applications. Monad touts throughput of up to 10,000 transactions per second and sub-second finality.

Coinbase launched cbBTC in September 2024 as a wrapped Bitcoin token on Ethereum and Base. The token is backed 1:1 by Bitcoin held in custody and designed to mint and redeem automatically against Bitcoin deposits on the exchange. The Chainlink CCIP integration now extends that infrastructure to Monad, with the protocol applying multiple layers of decentralized validation to reduce cross-chain risks and maintain consistent 1:1 backing across networks.
