EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - OpenAI has awarded a $4.8 million grant to ensure every public school student in Effingham County receives free breakfast and lunch for the 2026-27 school year, but the donation is being met with mixed reactions from local families.

The funding comes amid widespread community debate and protests surrounding “Project Camellia,” OpenAI’s proposed data center development in the county.

According to the Effingham County School District, the grant covers roughly 7,000 students who were not already qualified under state-funded free and reduced-price meal programs, effectively providing universal free meals across the district this year. The funding is drawn from an $80 million community fund pledged by OpenAI.

Despite the financial relief for families, several parents have voiced skepticism regarding the timing and intention behind the multi-million-dollar gift.

“I was shocked, absolutely shocked, when we live in a small, small place,” said Heather Jennings, whose two children attend district schools. Jennings expressed ongoing worry about the data center’s proximity to residential areas and an elementary school.

“I understand why people say that they feel like it’s a bribe, because it almost feels like that way,” Jennings said, noting that school meal prices had increased just before the announcement.

Parents have also raised questions about long-term sustainability, as the grant is only designated for the current school year. When asked whether the grant might continue into next year, the school district said no information is available at this time.

Jennings noted that while she wants every hungry child fed, she questions whether funding could have supported long-term, self-sustaining community initiatives instead of a one-time donation.
