CryptoRank reported that fake cryptocurrency anti-money-laundering checkers are being used to lure users into approving transactions that can drain their wallets. The scheme relies on websites or tools presented as AML verification services, a label that may appear credible to users seeking to check wallet activity or token-related risk.

In crypto, wallet approvals can give a smart contract permission to move specified tokens from a user’s address. If a user approves a malicious transaction, attackers may be able to use that authorization to transfer assets without needing the wallet’s private key. Such approvals are distinct from simply connecting a wallet to a website, though both actions can expose users to risk when interacting with untrusted services.

AML checks are commonly associated with compliance processes intended to identify potentially suspicious financial activity. The reported abuse of that terminology highlights how fraud campaigns can imitate legitimate crypto compliance and security tools. Users should treat transaction prompts carefully and verify what permissions a wallet is being asked to grant before approving them.

Why this matters

The scam pattern could lead to direct asset losses by exploiting token-approval permissions rather than stealing private keys. It also signals that trusted-looking compliance branding can be weaponized, increasing the risk for users who rely on unfamiliar AML or wallet-screening tools.
