Lloydminster RCMP are warning residents about a recent increase in fraud reports involving scammers posing as Government of Canada representatives or agencies claiming to act on behalf of the government.

Police say victims have been contacted by individuals claiming they face arrest, criminal charges or jail time unless money is transferred immediately.

In several cases, victims were directed to withdraw funds and deposit the money through Bitcoin ATMs.

Scammers using fear and urgency

RCMP say the fraudsters often use fear and urgency to pressure victims into acting before they have time to verify the claims.

Scammers may communicate through WhatsApp, text messages or other messaging applications and provide QR codes for victims to scan at Bitcoin ATMs.

Once scanned, the QR code directs the cryptocurrency transfer to an account controlled by the scammer.
