Superconducting hardware manufacturer IQM Quantum Computers (NASDAQ: IQMX) has been selected by CSC – IT Center for Science to deploy Europe’s first logical-qubit-capable superconducting quantum computer. Named LUMI-IQ, the system will be installed at CSC’s new data center in Kajaani, Finland, and directly integrated into the LUMI AI Factory environment to create a hybrid HPC-AI-quantum supercomputing platform.

Co-funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and a consortium of participating nations (Finland, Czechia, Norway, and Poland), LUMI-IQ will be delivered via a three-stage upgrade path from IQM’s Halocene product line through 2029. The initial 2027 deployment will feature an IQM Halocene H4 platform equipped with 150 physical qubits and early quantum error correction (QEC) capabilities. Subsequent hardware and control-electronics upgrades in 2028 and 2029 (culminating in the Halocene H5) will lower logical error rates, introduce fast real-time feedback loops, and enable full logical gate operations.

[ LUMI-IQ (Halocene Series) Staged Deployment & QEC Architecture ]
Deployment TimelineHardware GenerationQEC & Logical Qubit Capacity
Phase 1: 2027• IQM Halocene H4 (150 Physical Qubits)• Initial QEC Code Testing & Calibration
Phase 2: 2028• Hardware Upgrade & Low-Latency Control• Real-Time Error Correction Feedback
Phase 3: 2029• IQM Halocene H5 (Early FTQC Platform)• Up to 9 Logical Qubits (d=3 Surface/Color Code)
• Max Depth: d=11 Surface Code / d=9 Color Code
• Lattice Surgery & T-Gate Teleportation

Upon final phase completion, LUMI-IQ will support up to 9 fault-tolerant logical qubits using distance-3 surface and color codes, with structural capacity to encode single logical qubits up to distance-11 surface codes and distance-9 color codes. The platform will execute active lattice surgery and T-gate state distillation, giving European academic researchers and industrial users direct local control over fault-tolerant quantum algorithms embedded within an AI supercomputing cluster.
