- Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines, a system letting AI agents discover services, agree to terms, and pay for them within human-set spending limits, and demoed a live transaction at Cloudflare Connect.
- Built on the x402 protocol, it works via signed “payment vouchers” an agent generates when it hits a “402 Payment Required” response; a demo saw a marketing agent run an ad campaign across nine payments to two merchants on one budget, settled via Coinbase, Base and BVNK in fiat or stablecoins.
- It extends Mastercard’s rapid stablecoin and agent push, from Stablecoin Security to its Global Money Platform.
Mastercard is moving its vision of AI agents transacting on their own from concept to live demo, opening early access to a system called Agent Pay for Machines that lets autonomous software discover services, agree to terms and pay for them, all within limits a human sets.
The company first announced plans for the system in June and today unveiled the milestone at Cloudflare’s Connect conference, where Mastercard’s Jorn Lambert demonstrated a live transaction.
The pitch addresses a problem emerging as AI agents grow more capable: they are becoming “economic actors” that need to buy data from one provider, an AI model from another and computing power from a third, but today’s paid services typically demand an account, API key or billing relationship with each one, which breaks down when an agent is picking services on the fly.
