Chip design is a patently laborious process, one that involves hefty use of a specialized suite of EDA tools. Even so, as is the case with so many other technical fields right now, AI agents might soon be able to realistically shrink the chip design pipeline to mere hours or days, as a semiconductor expert appears to have just done by designing a viable crypto-specific SoC on the RISC-V architecture using only Meta's Muse AI agent.

The semiconductor expert @bubbleboi, who is also a mascot for the Thru blockchain project, recently penned an interesting post, detailing how he was able to use Meta's Muse AI agent to:

  1. Complete the place-and-route work - the step where you arrange all the tiny logic gates on the chip and then draw the metal wires that connect them - for a bespoke crypto-focused SoC on the RISC-V architecture via the OpenROAD software.
  2. Generate the final digital blueprint file, called GDS (or GDSII), of the entire chip layout. This is what is typically sent to a fab to manufacture the real silicon.
  3. Build support within the ASIC for standard cryptographic algorithms used in almost every blockchain for hashing data and creating/verifying digital signatures, including SHA-256/512, Keccak, Ed25519, and secp256k1.
