Bitcoin's climb back to the $80,000 level has reignited a long-running debate over whether the world's largest cryptocurrency is a revolutionary financial asset or a technological relic. The latest salvo came from venture capitalist Jason Calacanis, who likened Bitcoin to "the CD in the age of Spotify" and "the DVD in the age of Netflix." Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy, responded with a single figure: roughly $1.6 trillion in market capitalization.

The exchange highlights a fundamental disagreement about what Bitcoin is supposed to be. Calacanis, who has tracked the asset since its early years, argues that after 17 years it has failed to deliver on promises of mass adoption as a payment network or platform for smart contracts. User experience remains complicated, he contends, and public enthusiasm has faded. If Bitcoin were going to find an essential everyday use case, his reasoning goes, nearly two decades should have been enough.

Saylor sees the situation almost entirely differently. Rather than disputing the technical limitations point by point, he reframed the entire conversation. Bitcoin's primary application, in his view, is "digital capital" — a vehicle for preserving wealth across generations. That purpose, he argues, does not require the network to outperform newer blockchains on transaction speed or application flexibility.
