MoonPay said on Sept. 8 that its European business received an Electronic Money Institution license from the Dutch Central Bank. The authorization gives the crypto payments company a regulated basis to add payment accounts, related payment services and stablecoin issuance from the Netherlands.

The company announcement presents the license as an expansion of MoonPay Europe’s existing regulatory position rather than the launch of a finished product. MoonPay did not provide release dates, pricing or eligibility details for the accounts, stablecoins or cards it plans to develop.

The license widens MoonPay’s permitted services

MoonPay said the EMI authorization allows it to offer payment accounts to consumers and businesses, along with connected payment services. It also permits the company to issue stablecoins, opening a path into euro-denominated tokens and open-loop products that can circulate beyond a single merchant or platform.

The company described itself as the third Netherlands-based business to hold both a Markets in Crypto-Assets Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorization and an EMI license within one entity. It further claimed to be the first in that group to combine both licenses with open-loop stablecoin issuance capabilities. Those comparisons are MoonPay’s characterization and were not accompanied by a regulator-issued peer list.
