ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico’s attorney general has opened an investigation after OpenAI agents attempted and failed to access an old University of New Mexico digital library.

The attempt raised concerns about AI agents acting without human authorization.

Attorney General Raul Torrez said he will send a letter to OpenAI asking for information about how the company lost control of its AI agents as state leaders consider how to regulate the technology.

“I don’t think there’s anyone in this country, Republican, or Democrat, that has any faith that these guys are going to be able to police themselves,” Torrez said. “If D.C. is not going to take steps to make sure that we are not exposed to real danger from these companies, New Mexico has an opportunity.”

New Mexico lawmakers plan on Thursday to announce proposed legislation that addresses rogue AI agents.
