QuEra Computing Joins Maryland’s Capital of Quantum Initiative and Opens Facility in Discovery District

Boston-based neutral-atom quantum developer QuEra Computing has expanded its physical hardware footprint by establishing an office in the Discovery District Maryland (DDM). The expansion integrates QuEra into Maryland’s statewide Capital of Quantum (COQ) initiative—a regional technology cluster anchored by the University of Maryland (UMD) designed to coordinate over $500 million in public, federal, and private quantum investments.

Located in DDM’s Discovery Center alongside existing facilities for Microsoft, Quantum Motion, IQM, and Riverlane, the new office provides proximity to federal research entities, including NIST, NASA Goddard, and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Concurrently, QuEra expanded its partnership with UMD’s National Quantum Laboratory (QLab), granting university researchers, educators, and regional startups cloud access to its 256-qubit Aquila neutral-atom processing platform to accelerate algorithm development, hardware benchmarking, and quantum workforce training.

QuEra’s neutral-atom platform introduces a distinct hardware modality to the Capital of Quantum ecosystem, which already hosts trapped-ion, silicon CMOS, and superconducting quantum architectures. Neutral-atom systems utilize room-temperature vacuum chambers, optical tweezers, and dynamic laser-driven qubit repositioning to execute algorithm-specific connectivity maps without fixed physical wiring or dilution refrigeration.
