Strategy Stock Rises 7% as Bitcoin Climbs to $85,000

Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) shares are likely trading higher Monday alongside Bitcoin, which is trading around 6% higher at $85,000 today.

Strategy’s Bitcoin Holdings Drive the Swings

Strategy holds approximately 845,050 Bitcoin on its corporate balance sheet, making it the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin treasury and effectively a leveraged proxy for the cryptocurrency’s price. Because the company’s stock is valued heavily on the basis of its Bitcoin holdings, moves in Bitcoin tend to be magnified in Strategy’s share price, directly inflating the mark-to-market value of the company’s holdings.

Congress Advances a Bitcoin Reserve Bill

Adding to the momentum, the House Financial Services Committee voted 28-21 on September 16 to advance H.R. 8957, the American Reserve Modernization Act, which would direct the U.S. Treasury to establish a federal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve requiring 20-year mandatory custody of any coins held. The bill would codify the reserve concept into federal law, rather than leaving it dependent on executive action, since the current reserve exists only through an executive order President Donald Trump signed in March 2025.

Supporters argue that treating seized Bitcoin as a long-term national asset — rather than routinely auctioning it back into the market, as the government has historically done — signals growing institutional legitimacy for the asset class. The bill now awaits a vote from the full House of Representatives, though prediction markets have recently lowered the odds of it becoming law by 2027.
