Vitalik Buterin Says AI Will Strengthen Crypto Security, Not Break It

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says AI will make formal verification practical across entire software systems, turning it into a tool for defense rather than purely attacks.

Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin is pushing back on the idea that AI-powered hacking spells the end of cybersecurity, arguing in a Sept. 17 post on X that the same technology fueling new attacks could make software fundamentally harder to break. Buterin noted that roughly 90% of his net worth is held in crypto, framing his security optimism as a position he has a real stake in. "Anyone who continues to hold cryptocurrency, including me, is implicitly making that bet," he wrote.

His

centers on formal verification, a method that uses mathematical proofs to confirm that software meets a defined security standard. Buterin said AI systems capable of solving complex mathematical problems could apply the same reasoning to prove that a given program is secure, even when that program is large and complicated.

Buterin was careful to separate his optimism from any suggestion that security is simple. He said the most difficult challenge is not verifying that code meets a security definition, but writing the definition itself. A definition of what it means for a messaging app to be secure, for example, must account for passive and active attackers, server compromises, key leakage, metadata exposure, and hardware-level vulnerabilities, among other factors. He said definitions can run to over a thousand lines and require deep thought to get right.
