ChatGPT picked a winner when we forced it to choose between XRP and Bitcoin, but the real-world data tells a very different story about which coin actually has the stronger case right now.

We asked ChatGPT whether Bitcoin or XRP has more upside from here. ChatGPT gave a two-part answer at first, crediting XRP with more room to run in percentage terms while calling Bitcoin the safer, more established move. When we pushed the chatbox to pick one coin, it settled on XRP.

Here is how XRP and Bitcoin have actually performed in 2026, why ChatGPT favors XRP, and whether we think its pick holds up.

How Have XRP and Bitcoin Performed So Far in 2026?

XRP started trading in 2026 near $1.84 and trades near $1.35 today, down about 26%. The coin fell as low as $1 in mid-August before rallying more than 20% over the following weeks, and it remains well below its $3.84 all-time high from January 2018. XRP spot ETFs recorded $18.96 million in net inflows in the week ending September 4, per SoSoValue. This marked a sharp slowdown from the $110.5 million in net inflows recorded in the week ending August 28, although XRP ETFs remained in positive territory.

Bitcoin’s 2026 opening price was around $87,497 and trades near $77,565 today, down about 10%. The coin fell as low as $63,900 in early August before recovering, and it remains below its own all-time high of $126,198 from October 2025. Bitcoin’s ETFs pulled in $986.9 million during the week ending September 4 alone, extending a pattern of steady demand that has held up even as the altcoin funds slowed.
