Africa's Bitcoin-only ecosystem now has an official headcount: 180 verified projects spread across 23 countries.
That figure comes from the Live African Bitcoin Directory, maintained by the African Bitcoiners community. As of October 6-7, 2026, it reflects a cleanup as much as it reflects growth.
The directory had peaked at 189 projects in Q3 2026. Then the curators did something most growth charts never do: they went back and checked who was still around.
First, the expansion. The directory's count rose from 167 to 189 projects, an increase of 22 entries and a 13.2% jump.
Then came the audit. African Bitcoiners removed 11 listings that were inactive or no longer met the directory's standards, and added 2 new projects.
The growth was not evenly distributed across categories. Community projects grew 31% in Q3 2026 compared with the previous quarter, while businesses rose a more modest 3.7%.
The directory has been maintained continuously since early 2024. Back in Q1 2024, it covered 15 countries, mostly with educational and business initiatives.
By late 2025, coverage had reached 22 countries. Mauritius joined in Q2 2026, bringing the total to 23.
Projects are sorted into six buckets: business, community, circular economies, education, payments, and infrastructure. A circular economy, for the uninitiated, is a local area where people earn and spend Bitcoin directly, without constantly converting back to national currency.
