Riot Platforms is a bitcoin miner. Its newest tenant is not another miner but an AI lab.
Through the 20-year compute agreement, Anthropic secures rare grid-connected electricity as the need for AI processing climbs, repositioning Riot as an AI infrastructure landlord.
This deal follows an earlier agreement Riot made with Advanced Micro Devices. Together, they give Riot what Compass Point analyst Michael Donovan described as "a two-tenant campus carrying $9.8 [billion] of contracted data center revenue."
Why Bitcoin Miners Are Pivoting to AI
There was a time when investors treated bitcoin miners mainly as an amplified wager on the price of bitcoin. The shift from mining to AI hosting first emerged during the 2022 crypto downturn, mostly among smaller miners. Those companies were the most exposed when bitcoin's price dropped below the cost of production - electricity, hardware and other operating costs - for a long period.
