A payment screen that lists Bitcoin, Ether, USDT, and Litecoin can make them look like four versions of the same thing. They are all digital assets, but they do not behave alike when a price is quoted or a transaction is sent. Bitcoin, Ether, and Litecoin have market prices that can move independently, while USDT is designed to follow the US dollar. The network carrying the payment and the service receiving it add separate variables that also need to be taken into account.

A 2026 systematic review of stablecoins examined 122 primary studies and described fiat-backed stablecoins as lower-volatility media of exchange. USDT and USDC were the most frequently analysed examples in the reviewed literature. That distinction is useful at checkout: a stablecoin is designed around a value reference, while Bitcoin, Ether, and Litecoin are market-priced assets. Of course, “Lower volatility” still does not mean a permanently fixed price, and it says nothing by itself about network congestion, transaction fees, or the receiving service’s processing time.

What Changes When the Payment Asset Changes

The first question is what the displayed asset represents. The next is how it functions when making a transaction. Those questions are related, but a payment page can answer one without fully answering the other. An Australian consumer looking to pay with cryptocurrency will generally find Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, and Litecoin as the main supported options. Because these four dominate global transaction volumes, merchants and payment processors naturally prioritise them over smaller altcoins.
