A Nine-Day Run Comes to an End

The party lasted nine trading sessions starting August 17, when U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pulled in fresh money every single day (swelling to roughly $3.04 billion before it broke). On August 28, $202 million in net outflows made their way out of the funds, snapping the streak.

That nine-day tally had already pushed combined bitcoin ETF assets past a milestone few expected this fast. Bitcoin.com News reported the group crossed $100 billion in net assets on August 27, with Blackrock’s Ishares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) adding $277.6 million in a single day, even as Fidelity’s FBTC shed $83.6 million and Grayscale’s GBTC gave up another $27.2 million in the opposite direction.

That said, bitcoin ETFs have swung hard in both directions this year. Back in May, the same group of funds logged a record nine-day outflow streak that drained roughly $2.8 billion while bitcoin slid from around $80,000 to $73,000.

Spot ether ETFs told a different story because rather than following bitcoin, the alt’s funds added $102 million, stretching their own buying run to ten consecutive days. That said, ether’s funds have had help given that earlier in August, the category pulled in $2.6 billion in its strongest inflow week since October (with Blackrock’s ETHA doing much of the heavy lifting and tripling the sector’s usual trading volume along the way).
