CRYPTO CRIME | Trezor Cuts Hardware Wallet Resellers in Decisive Supply-Chain Security Move

Trezor is reducing its authorized reseller network after malicious hardware implants were found in Ledger devices taking a more restrictive approach to protecting crypto wallets before they reach users.

The move goes beyond checking device software or firmware. It targets the distribution chain itself where attackers can potentially modify physical devices without triggering conventional security checks.

Trezor said it had no evidence its own devices were compromised but will stop supplying affected resellers and remove them from its authorized network from January 1 2027. The company said the reduction would allow it to scrutinize remaining partners more closely.

The incident highlights a critical weakness in hardware wallet security – a device designed to keep private keys offline can still be compromised before reaching its owner. In Ledger’s case, unauthorized implants reportedly captured recovery phrases displayed during setup and transmitted them over cellular networks.

Trezor’s response signals a shift from relying primarily on device-level safeguards to treating reseller oversight and supply-chain integrity as part of wallet security itself.
