Cryptocurrency platforms around the world lost nearly $4 billion U.S. over an 18-month period due to cyberattacks.

A new report from crypto market data firm CoinGecko says that between January 2025 and July 2026, crypto platforms lost a combined $3.63 billion U.S. due to a variety of cyberattacks.

Stolen passkeys were among the most common ways that cryptocurrency companies were hacked by criminals and funds stolen, states the report.

The biggest cyberattack during the 18-month period involved cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, which lost $1.4 billion U.S. in a February 2025 cyberattack.

The second largest hack involved staking platform KelpDao, which lost $292 million U.S. to criminals, followed by decentralized exchange Drift Protocol, which had $285 million U.S. stolen.

The CoinGecko report notes that 60% of the affected crypto platforms were targeted by hackers despite having completed independent security audits.

The report notes that most of the cyberattacks targeted areas that audits do not typically check.

The majority of the cyberattacks on crypto platforms and companies continue to be perpetrated by hackers from North Korea, says CoinGecko in its latest report.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) is trading at $78,350 U.S. on Sept. 8.
