Crypto Taxable Activity Totaled $457 Billion In 2025: Report

Taxable activity across the cryptocurrency sector totaled $457 billion U.S. in 2025, according to a new report by Chainalysis. 

Of that amount, the U.S. accounted for $112.6 billion of activity in crypto markets that could be subject to government taxation.

The taxable activity includes gains on crypto holdings such as Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC), as well as income earned from crypto mining, staking, lending, gambling, and payments.

Regionally, North America accounted for $134.6 billion U.S. of what can be considered taxable activity, ahead of the European Union at $125.1 billion U.S. and Asia at $54.7 billion U.S.

However, the amount governments around the world actually collect in taxes from crypto activity is likely much less, noted Chainalysis. 

Most governments are struggling to make cryptocurrencies tax compliant in their jurisdiction and have been trying to crackdown on people who use digital assets to skirt taxes.  

Global crypto tax reporting is expanding though, with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) "Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework" requiring participating service providers to report customer transaction data to tax authorities. 

Dozens of countries are set to begin exchanging information on crypto activities for tax purposes under the new OECD regime beginning in 2027.
