Bitcoin and Ethereum News

Denmark's largest lender

reversed

its cryptocurrency stance Tuesday by offering Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded products to customers. Danske Bank had prohibited all crypto services since 2018, citing transparency and regulatory concerns.

The bank will provide ETP access through its eBanking and Mobile Banking platforms to self-directed investors who trade without receiving advice. BlackRock and WisdomTree are supplying the products, which track

Kerstin Lysholm, head of investment products at Danske Bank, said customer inquiries increased as cryptocurrency became more established as an asset class. The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation framework improved oversight and pushed the bank toward offering regulated exposure options.

Danske initially

banned crypto

trading in 2018 after declaring it was negative toward digital assets. The institution

renewed

this restriction in 2021, explicitly stating it would not support cryptocurrency transactions or investments through its systems.

Lysholm noted that regulation has strengthened investor protections and market transparency. The bank concluded that conditions now support making cryptocurrency products available to clients who understand and accept associated risks.

Access remains limited to customers who pass appropriateness tests demonstrating sufficient knowledge. Danske emphasized it does not recommend crypto as an asset class and views digital assets as opportunistic rather than long-term portfolio holdings.

The bank characterized cryptocurrencies as very high-risk investments that can result in substantial losses. All customers must complete suitability checks confirming they grasp product characteristics before executing trades.

Approximately 70,605 cryptocurrency owners

existed

in Denmark as of 2024, representing 1.2% of the population. The country ranked 84th globally for crypto adoption based on on-chain value received by centralized and decentralized platforms,

to Chainalysis data.
