August turned out upbeat for Wall Street. State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust SPY has offered 3.7% over the past month (as of Aug. 30, 2026). State Street SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust DIA has added about 2.6%, the Nasdaq-100 ETF Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 QQQ tacked on 4.8% gains, and the small-cap iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) added about 1.1%.
Below are the key developments of the month, which played a role in ETF asset generation.
Treasury Buybacks Support Debasement
The Treasury doubled the maximum size of its bond buyback operation to at least $4 billion from $2 billion to help contain rising yields. Though small relative to the Treasury market, the move strengthened the debasement trade.
Dollar Hits Three-Month Low
The U.S. dollar fell to a three-month low against the euro amid concerns that larger Treasury buybacks could pressure the greenback. Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund UUP gained just 0.14% over the past month through Aug. 28, while gold jumped 8.4%.
Crypto Rally Gains Steam
Bitcoin and Ethereum climbed about 23% and 32%, respectively, over the past month as the dollar weakened and optimism around U.S. crypto regulation increased.
