The advanced technology is scheduled to be installed at Skyview High School in Herndon in December, according to a news release.
Virginia’s largest school district partnered with the group Connected DMV and Fairfax County’s Economic Development Authority to provide high schoolers access to the computer.
“These are the kinds of opportunities that help students discover what is possible, build the skills and confidence to navigate an ever-changing world, and ultimately lead us into the future,” Superintendent Michelle Reid said in a statement.
Quantum computers operate using quantum physics, though existing versions are error-prone, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
However, the quantum computer is thought to be able to solve problems that would take current computers years. It could help break through security encryption or create new drugs, according to NIST.
The device is the size of a small refrigerator, School Board Member Kyle McDaniel said. Students will get access to it next spring.
Programming will start with a quantum computing pathway, and eventually, students will be able to take a course and earn professional credentials. They’ll also learn about the technology’s capabilities and limitations.
