Your window to world news: Xi Jinping’s Egypt visit and Germany’s Russia sanctions to the Charlie Kirk case heading to trial, Putin’s Ukraine battlefield claims, a proposed US passport rule, Tiger Woods’ DUI plea change and the FBI’s Hamas crypto seizure — here’s your roundup for the day

Xi Jinping arrives in Egypt: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Egypt for his first state visit there in a decade, as Beijing seeks to deepen economic and strategic ties with Cairo amid shifting Middle East alliances. The visit also marks 70 years of China-Egypt diplomatic relations.

Germany blames Russia: Germany accused Russia of a drone attack involving explosives at Leipzig airport on August 4 and announced sanctions, including closing a Russian consulate and tightening entry rules, reported AFP. The EU, Nato, Britain, France and Poland backed Berlin, while Moscow rejected the allegations.

Charlie Kirk case heads to trial: A Utah judge ruled that Tyler Robinson, 23, will stand trial for aggravated murder in the 2025 shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, as per CNN. The charge could carry the death penalty, life without parole, or 25 years to life.

Putin claims battlefield gains: Putin said Russia is advancing in Ukraine, claiming 270 sq km seized in Donetsk in August, while calling Kyiv’s leadership “terrorists”. He ruled out negotiations with them but said Moscow remains open to talks aimed at ending the war.
