Grayscale filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 20 to launch an
(ETF) holding Worldcoin (
), the native cryptocurrency of the World Network. If approved, it would mark the first US-listed investment product tied to WLD, giving investors regulated exposure to a crypto project built around biometric identity verification.
Grayscale described the fund as a passive investment vehicle. It said the trust's investment objective is for the value of each share to reflect the value of WLD held by the trust, based on a reference index price, after deducting the trust's expenses and other liabilities.
If approved, the ETF would trade on the Nasdaq Stock Market under its generic listing standards. The Bank of New York Mellon would serve as transfer agent, while BitGo Bank & Trust, NA would act as custodian.
The Project Behind the Token
Worldcoin, later rebranded as World, was cofounded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The project links biometric identification with
technology, using a spherical scanning device to verify users' iris data. Participants who complete the scan receive a decentralized digital passport confirming their identity. WLD carried a market capitalization of $1.3 billion at the time of the filing, ranking it 57th among cryptocurrencies by that measure.
