India’s long working hours and relatively low wages are putting a different perspective on the country’s leading position in global crypto adoption. Periodic Labour Force Survey data showed Indians worked an average of 41.7 hours per week in 2024, while a comparison shared by market analyst Sunil Gurjar placed average weekly earnings at ₹5,675.

The figures raise questions for Indian investors: does limited disposable income encourage small-scale participation in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, or does it limit the capital households can deploy?

India’s Wage Gap Meets High Crypto Participation

India ranked first overall in Chainalysis’ 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index and also led its retail centralized services, DeFi, and institutional categories. However, high participation does not necessarily mean individual investors hold large portfolios.

CoinSwitch data highlights the retail-heavy profile. Its Q2 2026 data showed 54.4% of new investors were aged 18 to 25, while another 25.4% were 26 to 35.

That age concentration matters when viewed alongside India’s wage figures, as disposable income determines how much money investors can place at risk.
