Jackson, Michigan bans crypto ATMs

The city of Jackson, Michigan, is joining several other states and localities in banning crypto ATMs. The council unanimously passed an ordinance to ban all crypto ATMs from operating in the community, according to a report by M Live.

Under the law, no one may install or host the ATM or perform cryptocurrency transactions via cashier.

"The City Council finds that the continued operation of virtual currency kiosks within the city poses a significant risk to public welfare, facilitates financial exploitation and undermines consumer protection efforts," the resolution states. "Regulatory safeguards adopted in other jurisdictions have in many instances proven insufficient to prevent ongoing harm."

The ordinance will take effect on Oct. 22. From then, operators have 90 days to remove the ATMs or face penalties.
