MicroStrategy has halted Bitcoin purchases and shifted its strategy to prioritize building cash reserves, marking a dramatic departure from Michael Saylor’s aggressive accumulation approach. The company sold $333.7 million in common stock during the week ending August 16, 2026, bringing its cash reserves to $4.8 billion while maintaining its Bitcoin holdings at roughly 843,775 BTC, valued at approximately $58 billion, according to reports from August 17.
The pause in Bitcoin buying extends back to mid-June 2026, when the company announced a pivot from its longstanding “never sell” stance toward active capital management. On June 29, 2026, Strategy Inc. disclosed a Digital Credit Capital Framework, effectively authorizing the company to treat Bitcoin as a flexible capital asset rather than a permanent holding. The shift came after the company spent $1.38 billion from its cash reserves in May 2026 to retire $1.5 billion in convertible debt due 2029 at an 8% discount, according to CoinDesk and other financial outlets.

The company’s accumulation strategy had generated substantial unrealized losses as Bitcoin prices declined. CryptoQuant reported in June 2026 that Strategy held a $10.6 billion unrealized loss, with all Bitcoin purchased in 2024, 2025, and 2026 underwater at that time. The mounting losses, combined with the need to cover preferred share dividends and debt obligations, forced Saylor to reconsider his previous conviction that the company should never sell its holdings.
