Samsung is researching a new way to arrange memory in future quantum computers. The company has patented a structure that stacks superconducting quantum memory in layers rather than placing the components side by side. This could let the company fit more memory on the same chip.
A vertical memory structure for quantum computers
Samsung has registered a patent in South Korea under KR102778201B1 for a new superconducting qubit memory structure (via ETNews). The patent focuses on stacking multiple superconducting resonator layers vertically, so quantum memory components can occupy more of the same chip area. The company has also registered similar patents in the US (US12062826B2, US12381298B2).
Quantum computers operate differently from conventional computers. Instead of using bits that can hold either 0 or 1, they use quantum bits, or qubits, which can hold both states at the same time through superposition. Samsung uses superconducting circuits to create these qubits, which depend on electrical resistance disappearing at very low temperatures.
