She picked Solana over Bitcoin because the technology was genuinely superior, and the network has since gotten even faster. So why did her investment collapse at three times the rate of someone who bought Bitcoin that same day?

A buyer who purchased Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) at a record high of $293 on January 19, 2025, has now seen her investment drop by 62%. That’s about three times the loss a Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) buyer experienced on the same day. She chose Solana because it was known as the fastest major blockchain in the crypto market, a claim that still holds true.

As of October 12, 2026, the Solana price stands at around $112. By comparison, a Bitcoin buyer on January 19, 2025, paid roughly $104,000 per coin, and Bitcoin now trades at about $83,400, a loss of around 20%.

So, if Solana’s technology delivered on its promises, why did its price fall so much more than Bitcoin’s?

Solana Delivered the Speed Its $293 Buyers Expected

On October 9, Solana’s network reduced its block time to just 200 milliseconds, making it the fastest among major blockchains. Block time is how quickly a blockchain records a new batch of transactions; shorter times mean faster confirmations for payments or trades. Solana’s developers are also planning an upgrade called Alpenglow, which aims to improve final settlement speed further.
