U.S. Pours Heavy Funding into Quantum Computing, as GlobalFoundries Secures $375 Million in R&D Grants

The current round of U.S. quantum computing support policies combines R&D funding, government equity participation, and domestic manufacturing to seize leadership in the next generation of computing. GlobalFoundries (GFS), leveraging its specialty processes and manufacturing foundation, not only receives direct funding to advance quantum chip production but also stands to secure a significant position in the future industrial ecosystem through collaborations with funded quantum firms. For investors, the value of subsidies lies in reducing R&D financing constraints and enhancing commercialization visibility, yet long-term valuation still hinges on whether companies can build reliable systems and deliver tangible advantages over classical computing in economically valuable tasks.

U.S. chipmaker GlobalFoundries announced on Tuesday that it had signed a final agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Act R&D office, securing $375 million in R&D funding to accelerate its Quantum Technology Solutions (QTS) business. The initiative aims to scale up U.S.-based semiconductor manufacturing for quantum computing and solidify the nation’s leadership in quantum technology. Around the same time, three leading U.S. quantum computing startups—Rigetti Computing (RGTI), D-Wave Quantum (QBTS), and Quantinuum (QNT)—also announced the signing of final agreements, collectively receiving $100 million to address key technical challenges in scaling superconducting quantum computers. Bolstered by the news, GlobalFoundries shares rose over 3% in early trading, while Rigetti and D-Wave each surged nearly 10%.
